The Cyber Bureau under the Police Headquarters has decided to prosecute those who upload misleading captions and pictures on social media including YouTube and Tiktok. The bureau has warned that social media has been misused for the purpose of influencing the investigation of serious crimes.
"For some time now, various individuals and groups have been abusing technology and uploading videos and pictures with misleading and false captions on social media including YouTube and Tiktok for the purpose of influencing the investigation of serious crimes."
The bureau has said that "there is a tendency to spread rumors and incitement in the society, to disrupt social harmony, to violate the right of the victim to privacy and to disrupt the social and harmony of the victim, and to violate the right to privacy and to have a negative impact on their social and mental health."
The Bureau has warned that action will be taken in accordance with the prevailing law for such activities under Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act 2063. "The Cyber Bureau as a whole urges you not to engage in such activities," the statement said.
